These Are the U.S. Cities With the Most Car Accidents

Car accidents are an all-too-common experience for most Americans. A car crash happens every five seconds on roads across the country, according to the U.S. General Services Administration. And where you live might have something to do with your vulnerability to accidents.

A new report from ConsumerAffairs examined car crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s 2022 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to determine which cities and states had the most car accidents, both non-fatal and fatal. The study also drew upon data from the NHTSA’s Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS) and ranked each city and state by the number of car crashes per 100,000 people.

In the highest spot is Memphis, Tennessee, which also topped ConsumerAffairs‘ 2023 list for the worst drivers in America. Memphis is trailed by the Florida cities of Daytona Beach, Ocala, and Fort Lauderdale and the Georgia cities of Macon and Albany. Florida boasts three of the top 10 worst cities in the country for car accidents — more than any other state at the top of the list. Nearly all of the cities in the top 15 are in the South, with the sole outliers being Tuscon, Arizona; St. Louis, Missouri; and Little Rock, Arkansas.
