While fans of the hit Amazon Prime Video series The Boys await word on the official release date for the fifth and final season, one thing to safely expect is that there’s bound to be plenty of gross and off-the-wall moments. The Boys has never pulled punches when it comes to pushing the limits of creativity, even when it leads to supervillain moments that leave your jaw on the floor. Those are all planned and part of filming, but a recent story about Karl Urban, who stars as Billy Butcher, was very real and certainly qualifies as “gross.”
Urban’s on-screen wife, Shantel VanSanten, who plays Becca Butcher in The Boys, recently joined a FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention panel and revealed one moment she surely can’t forget fast enough.
Karl Urban’s Unaired ‘The Boys’ Take That Shocked His On-Screen Wife

The panel was moderated by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, and the site revealed a story VanSanten told about filming a pivotal scene in The Boys, in which her character was dying in Urban/Butcher’s arms.
“When I was dying in [Urban’s] arms on the floor, it was freezing, freezing cold, I’m covered in blood, sun is setting, hurry up. We’re going to shoot Karl’s coverage and I’m off camera, so I’m laying on the ground, but I’m there so that we can say our final words to each other,” VanSanten described.
“And it’s his close-up, so the camera’s basically right next to my face here, and he’s like saying goodbye to me, and they roll, and he does one, and he’s like, ‘No, I’m gonna do it again.’” she continues. “And he leans down out of frame, and he wipes his f—ing snot on my cheek! On my face, like drips his snot on my cheek, and then he came up out of frame because he was crying so much and his head is down and says the line, and they’re like, ‘And, cut.’”
In short, Urban decided to use poor VanSanten’s cheek as a tissue, which, understandably, she wasn’t the biggest fan of.
After explaining that she asked Urban, “Did you really just wipe your snot on my face?” his response to the entire scene, which wasn’t the one The Boys chose to air, was what she described as “very Karl.”
‘What was I supposed to do?’ Urban said, to which VanSanten told him to use his sleeve. However, that wasn’t an option, it seems, as Urban said, “Oh, it’s dirty and bloody.”
Choosing your on-screen wife’s face over your own dirty shirt is a bold move, but it sounds like Urban added his fair share of unaired (sometimes gross) entertainment over five seasons of The Boys.
Latest on ‘The Boys’ Season 5 Release Date
As previously mentioned, there’s still no official release date for the final season of The Boys. On a positive note, filming for Season 5 wrapped up in July 2025, after commencing in November 2024. As a result, the expectation remains that the final installment of the popular show will air sometime in 2026.
Although the wait to see how things play out with Butcher and Homelander, among several other noteworthy storylines, is the tough part, The Boysspin-off series, Gen V, has teed up a few cameos for its second season. The second season of Gen V officially released on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 17, 2025, and the eight episodes run through Oct. 22.
For good measure, once Season 5 of The Boys wraps up, it shouldn’t be long before another highly anticipated spin-off makes its debut. Vought Rising, a prequel to The Boys, stars Jensen Ackles, reprising his role as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash returning as Stormfront, and is expected in late 2026 or 2027, according to MovieWeb.
