
The area of Lima, Peru, was hit by a major earthquake on Sunday.
Early on Sunday morning, it was reported that a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the coast of Lima just before noon local time, per Teo Blaskovic of The Watchers.
“A strong earthquake registered by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) as M6.1 hit near the coast of Lima, Peru, at 16:35 UTC (11:35 local time) on June 15, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 49 km (78 miles). USGS is reporting M5.6 at a depth of 53 km (32 miles),” Blaskovic wrote.
The epicenter of the quake was reportedly 46 miles southwest of Lima, although the residents in Lima clearly felt the shaking.
“IGP received numerous felt reports from Lima, Callao, and surrounding districts, consistent with moderate to strong ground shaking across the metropolitan area,” the report stated.
A video surfaced of the earthquake as well, which included landslides.

Earthquakes in Peru are quite common, given that they sit in one of the most active seismic zones, and these landslides caused several transit services to temporarily shut down on Sunday morning.
At the time of publication, one person had reportedly passed away due to the earthquake while he was “standing outside his vehicle waiting for a passenger,” according to CNN.
Five people were also injured due to the earthquake in what was an unfortunate and tragic situation in Peru.
