In 2010, Kate Leeming made history by becoming the first person to cycle from Africa’s westernmost point to its easternmost one. More recently, she decided to become the first person to cycle Namibia’s desert coastline, ominously known as the Skeleton Coast. A new documentary series called Diamonds in the Sand captured the monthlong journey, which involved surviving heat, headwinds, and wildlife like hyenas, elephants, and lions. While traveling 1,000 miles on her custom fat bike, Leeming wove past aging shipwrecks and sun-bleached animal bones and took in stunning views of the arid landscape. Throughout its four installments, the series documents her mental and physical struggles and the history and ecology of this region.
