Season 2 on Landman is here, and with it, a surprising, subtle twist ending. This new season begins where the previous season ended, with Tommy’s oil enterprise entering questionable territory and an uncertain future. But what happens at the very end of Episode 1, “Death and a Sunset,” and how this writing choice from Taylor Sheridan puts Landman on a very different emotional path than last season.
Here’s what happens at the end of Landman Season 2, Episode 1, and why it’s such a game-changer for the season. Spoilers ahead.
Landman Season 2, Episode 1, Ending Explained

There’s a lot going on in this episode: Cami (Demi Moore) navigates her new role in running the oil company, Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) desperately tries to get into the college she wants, while Ariana (Paulina Chavez) and Cooper (Jacob Lofland) react to their newfound good luck. But the ending of “Death and a Sunset” doesn’t have to do with any of those plot points.
Instead, throughout the episode, we’ve been checking with T.L. (Sam Elliot), an older man who appears to be in or visiting a nursing home. Turns out, T.L. is T.L. Norris, Tommy’s father. After a huge, and somewhat hilarious argument between Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) and Angela (Ali Larter), Tommy gets a phone call he wasn’t expecting. Angela is furious that he’s answered the phone in such a heated moment. “Who died?” she demands to know. And the answer is, Tommy’s mother.
With this moment, Landman shifts into a new tone. Now, clearly, one aspect of this season will be about Tommy and his family dealing with the death of his mother, but also, clearly, the reincorporation of Tommy’s father, T.L., into his life.
We know that Sam Elliot is a major character this season, but seeing how T.L. changes the game might be the most interesting thing about Landman yet.
