The Glenlivet Just Dropped a Rare Whisky Aged in a Completely New Way

The Glenlivet has released a new aged Scotch whisky called Caskmakers. To make it, the Speyside distillery meticulously deconstructed two barrels, then combined the staves to build a new, reconstructed cask. For this run of bottles, the Pernod Ricard-owned brand united ex-sherry casks from Jerez, Spain, and freshly charred European oak barrels. 

On the nose, the whisky offers aromas of ripe pear and honey, alongside notes of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. The palate features rich stone fruits and oak balanced by smoke and charred pineapple. The rich finish lingers with a mixture of sweet and spicy notes.

“This exceptional release, born from harnessing a complex new technique, not only honors our rich history but showcases our relentless drive towards innovation and excellence,” says Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet cask master. “Integrating this method of cask creation elevates the complexity of the whisky’s flavor profile and represents our dedication to constantly exciting whisky connoisseurs around the globe.”

Unfortunately, it won’t be so easy to find The Glenlivet Caskmakers at stores near home. It’s exclusively available at selected duty-free stores in airports across the globe for $225—but it’s worth the trouble of a refundable ticket. 

It’s an innovative release for the storied whisky maker. But not the only unique bottle the brand has released recently. The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection, which hit shelves earlier this year, was made by finishing Scotch in bespoke casks crafted from a combination of first-fill rum and bourbon barrels.
