The 'Loneliest House in the World' Is a Former Hunting Lodge on Ellidaey Island

You may have seen the small white home on Facebook or TikTok reels, where it often makes a showing.

Dubbed the “loneliest house in the world,” the home on Ellidaey Island in Iceland has served as a hunting lodge. It stands by itself on a rocky pile.

Over the years, the home has been the subject of many viral and false rumors, including some relating to the singer Björk. The “loneliest house in the world” has been the subject of YouTube videos.

Several YouTubers Journeyed to the ‘Loneliest House in the World’

YouTuber Uki Deane even convinced a man named Ragnar Thor to take him to the house on a boat. Because the island is surrounded by cliffs, he revealed that you have to climb the rocky sides of the island to get to the house.

He learned from the Icelandic locals that the home was used by a hunting association to hunt puffins. He even visited the inside of the home, where the kitchen is powered by gas. Family photos adorned the walls. A series of twin beds stood upstairs, and there is a normal looking livingroom.

Another YouTuber, Ryan Trahan, also visited the island, staying overnight in the home.

The House Stands on a ‘Speck of Land’ Near an Icelandic Archipelago

Architectural Digest wrote that the house stands on “a windswept speck of land south of Iceland’s Vestmann archipelago.” Ellidaey Island is “just under two square miles,” is considered uninhabited (except by puffins), and contains just that one home and another building that was used to observe puffins, according to Architectural Digest.

Contrary to popular rumors, the singer Björk does not live on the island, Architectural Digest reported, although the prime minister of Iceland did offer her another island in 2000.

The Ellidaey Hunting Association built the home as a hunting lodge in the 1950s, that site reported. However, Snopes, in a post debunking some of the viral myths about the home, noted that there is no evidence it is still used to hunt puffins.
