Just a few days after a 40-22 blowout loss in the Super Bowl, Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce admitted he was considering retirement.
The future Hall of Fame tight end cited the mental and physical toll of playing three more games per season than most of the rest of the NFL given the Chiefs’ deep playoff runs. After taking a few weeks to decide his future, Kelce announced his plans to return for the 2025 season.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Chiefs tight end and his older brother, Jason, took to social media with a surprise announcement before the latest episode of their “New Heights” podcast.

The brothers announced an in-person episode – a stark departure from the 2024 NFL season when they produced the podcast from separate corners of the United States. During the latest episode, the younger Kelce brother admitted why he’s coming back.
“I think the biggest thing is that I [expletive] love playing the game of football,” he explained. “I love playing, I still feel like I can play at a high level. And possibly at a higher level than I did last year, I don’t think it was my best outing. I let my guys down in a lot more moments than I helped them, especially if you look at my track record and how I’ve been in years past. I just, you know, I wanna give it a good run.”

He went on to give credit to the Chiefs fans and community in Kansas City.
“I love so many people in Kansas City … it’s home for me now. I don’t wanna leave that life yet. I put in a lot of hard work and I put in a lot of focus into being the best that I can for KC and last year it didn’t end well for us,” he said.
“I feel like there’s a responsibility in me to play out the contract that I initially signed, to give Kansas City and the Chiefs organization everything that I got, and that’s what I’m gonna do, man.”
