When Vin Diesel was asked to present the award for Best Blockbuster Achievement at the 82nd Golden Globes, his response was “It’s about damn time.” While the Golden Globes have been honoring more mainstream blockbuster movies since 2023, this year, choosing Diesel to present the award made perfect sense. We all know and love Vin from the Fast franchise, but where would we be without The Chronicles of Riddick?
The point is that Vin Diesel is a legend. But even more legendary than his films, is perhaps, Vin Diesel’s beef with Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. But now, with just two words, Diesel could have indicated that the gulf between them is healing.
Just before beginning to present the Golden Globes blockbuster award, Diesel said: “Hi, Dwayne,” acknowledging that the Rock was in the audience. Was he messing with Johnson? Or are these two bros, perhaps, finally, going to be on speaking terms again? Johnson smiled, a bit awkwardly, but was he actually mad? Maybe these guys are good again?
Although the Rock joined the Fast franchise in 2011 in the film Fast Five, since 2016, there has been a reported feud between the two actors, partly because Johnson referred to members of the Fast cast as “candy asses,” which many believed to be a dig at Diesel.
Over the years, Diesel has said that some of the feud was overblown in the press, noting that he considered himself to be “close” with Johnson. In 2021, Johnson admitted that the “candy ass” Instagram post was a mistake, saying “I shouldn’t have shared that.” In 2023, Johnson returned as his character Luke Hobbs in the post-credits scene of Fast X. The director of that film, Louis Leterrier, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, that he was partially responsible for making sure Diesel and Johnson were on better terms for the movie. Johnson is expected to return for Fast X: Part 2 in 2026.
So yes, there’s a good bet that Diesel was being genuinely warm toward the Rock at the Golden Globes. Both men have referred to each other as “brothers” and if the Fast franchise has taught us anything, the most important thing to these guys, deep down, is family.
Fast X is streaming on Peacock.
