24 Years Ago Today: Final Film For The 'Greatest Comedy Trilogy of All Time' Released

On the same day Mick Jagger celebrated the final birthday of his ’50s, the last film of an iconic comedy movie series premiered in the United States.

Jagger, the lead singer of The Rolling Stones, celebrates his 83rd birthday today. Additionally, today marks 24 years since the third film in a beloved comedy trilogy debuted in theaters.

Canadian comedian and Saturday Night Live star alumnus Mike Myers starred as the main protagonist, Austin Powers, and main villain Dr. Evil in the 1997 film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Two years later, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me was released.

More stars were added to an already deep cast for the third film, Austin Powers in Goldmember. The highly anticipated third installment was released in theaters on July 26, 2002.

Myers also portrayed Goldmember, a hilarious knock-off of the iconic Bond villain, Goldfinger. In her theatrical movie debut, Beyoncé Knowles plays Foxxy Cleopatra, Powers’ love interest. Michael Caine plays Austin’s father, Nigel Powers.

Returning cast members included Michael York (Basil), Seth Green (Scott Evil), Robert Wagner (Number 2), Verne Troyer (Mini Me) and Mindy Sterling (Frau).

In 2017, Moviefone named the Austin Powers film series “the greatest comedy trilogy of all time.” For their rankings of the 100 greatest comedies ever, Variety placed International Man of Mystery at No. 30.

Austin Powers in Goldmember grossed $296.9 million at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

Mike Myers Recently Teased a Fourth ‘Austin Powers’ Film

Myers was at Trevor Noah’s World Cup Watch Party (h/t People) for the France vs. Senegal game on June 16. When Noah asked Myers if there would be a fourth Austin Powers film, the 63-year-old told him, “Yes.”

Last month, Myers (as Dr. Evil) returned for the Verizon “Menace Mobile” advertisement. Green, Sterling and Rob Lowe (he portrayed a young Number 2 in the series) also reprised their roles.
