Behind the Scenes of San Francisco's Oldest Italian Deli

Every day, nearly half of Americans eat a sandwich for lunch. And it makes sense—slap some ingredients between two slices of bread and you’ve got a meal without too much thought. And, granted, the results are typically acceptable. But a good sandwich? Hoo-boy, that’s a whole different story.

TikTok creator Jack’s Dining Room might have found one of the best at San Francisco’s Molinari Delicatessen. Founded in 1896, Molinari is known as the “oldest Italian deli in America.” Handed down through four generations, the business is now run by great-great-grandson Nicola who, according to the video, “is rocking one of the most prolific mustaches.”

In addition to making pasta, the delicatessen also imports the “best ingredients from Italy” including olive oil, panettone, and balsamic vinegar.

However, we get the impression that Molinari’s sandwiches are where it’s at. According to Jack’s Dining Room, you’ve “got to try” the Luciano Special made with Parma prosciutto, sweet coppa, fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, onions, and lettuce on grilled focaccia.

Made with the deli’s own handmade salame, Luciano is the kind of sammie that could change your day for the better. Heck, watching this video, it looks like a sandwich that could change your life.
