Legendary Comedian’s Final Movie, Named Worst Western of All Time, Has 0% on Rotten Tomatoes

John Candy became one of the top comedians of all time during his legendary acting career.
Candy starred in many hit comedy movies since his career started in 1973, including Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987), The Blues Brothers (1980), National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) and Home Alone (1990), among many others.
However, after a lengthy career, Candy passed away on March 4, 1994, at the age of 43 after a sudden heart attack. This happened while he was living in Durango, Mexico, when he was filming his final movie, a Western comedy called Wagons East!
The movie was released a few months after Candy’s death on August 26, 1994. However, despite being one of Candy’s last films, Wagons East! did not do well at the box office, earning only $4.4 million on a $23 million budget. And critics did not like it either, with Rotten Tomatoes giving the movie a 0% on the Tomatometer.
While Wagons East! was the final movie Candy filmed, it was not the last to be released in theaters, as his comedy Canadian Bacon was released in 1995.
Wagons East! Ranked as the Worst Western Movie of All Time
While a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes is bad for the final movie Candy filmed, it can get worse.
In fact, Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert recently ranked Wagons East! as the No. 1 worst Western of all time.
“Although it stars the allegedly hip Richard Lewis, its ‘humor’ consists largely of barnyard jokes, kicks in the crotch, hayseeds in love with their cows, jokes about gays and hookers, and a lot of shots where people fall over things, and things fall over them,” Ebert said.
Ebert also noted that “many of Candy’s scenes were done with the power of CGI and body doubles” following his death.
Wagons East! beat out other disappointing films for Ebert’s worst Western, including 1967’s A Minute to Pray and Death Rides A Horse, along with 1970’s Dirty Dingus Magee starring Frank Sinatra.
